Here’s a simple guide breaking down the process into six clear steps, and at Safe Drive Minibus Academy, we take take of every single step for you! Getting you qualified and on the road in no time!

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Before starting the application, check if you’re eligible to drive a minibus.

  • • You must be at least 21 years old.

  • • Hold a full UK car driving licence (Category B).

  • • Meet the medical standards required for driving larger vehicles.

Step 2: Apply for a Provisional D1 Licence

To drive a minibus, you’ll usually need a D1 category licence. This means:

  • • Completing a D2 application form.

  • • Getting a D4 medical form completed by a doctor.
    • Once approved, your driving licence will show provisional entitlement for Category D1.

Step 3: Pass the Theory Test

With your provisional D1, you’ll need to sit a PCV (Passenger Carrying Vehicle) theory test. This includes:

  • • Multiple-choice questions.

  • • Hazard perception test.

  • • Case study questions (CPC Module 2, if required).

Step 4: Driver Training

Professional minibus driver training is essential. With expert instructors, you’ll learn:

  • • Safe handling of larger vehicles.

  • • Passenger comfort and safety.

  • • Road awareness and manoeuvring skills.
    • This training prepares you for the practical test and builds confidence behind the wheel.

Step 5: Pass the Practical Test

The D1 practical test involves:

  •

  • • Vehicle safety questions.

  • • On-road driving with an examiner.

  • • Off-road exercises, such as reversing.
    • Once passed, you’ll gain your full D1 entitlement.

Step 6: Complete Driver CPC (if required)

If you’re driving a minibus professionally or for hire/reward, you’ll also need to complete the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). This ensures you meet legal requirements for commercial driving.
